The airport was built in the 1920s and was originally used exclusively by the military. The first civilian terminal appeared in 1958. The modern terminal was opened in 1992.
Malta Airport is open 24 hours a day and has 2 runways 3,544 and 2,377 metres long, which allows to accept private aircraft of all types without restrictions. The airport has a separate VIP lounge for business jets with a separate entrance.
